The power and passion of Tchaikovsky's music is irresistible and tonight's concert features
some of his best-loved pieces. The emotional story of Romeo and Juliet's tragic love is
dramatically told in the
Fantasy Overture. Following this, the soaring opening of the First
Piano Concerto sweeps the listener along on an emotional tide of melody, romance and
energy, a showcase for virtuoso pianists. If Symphony No.5 begins gloomily, it ends
triumphantly, with many thrills and beauties along the way.

Mass in C
Meet the artists, free pre-concert talk from
6.30pm presented by Edward Seckerson
Beethoven's Mass in C is a beautiful and outgoing work, stirring and contemplative, offering
hope and consolation. Bob Chilcott has composed a modern and accessible counterpart,
taking texts from the traditional Requiem and from the Book of Common Prayer. In
this reflective and uplifting work for soloists, chorus and orchestra, Chilcott uses the same
scoring as did Beethoven, and should beguile and inspire listeners.
