The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's latest series of concerts in the warm and
intimate surroundings of Cadogan Hall begins on the 8th November with the
special
Pink Ribbon Gala Concert, in aid of Breast Cancer Campaign. Presented by
Simon Bates and conducted by Debbie Wiseman, this popular programme features
some of Debbie Wiseman's own music alongside notable faces from stage and
screen, such as Cherie Lunghi, Prunella Scales, George Layton and Timothy West.
On the 17th November, the RPO gives us its own version of
The Italian Job with
a concert including pieces by Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky, with violin virtuoso
Lara St John playing that most devilish of composers, Paganini. Other concertos
include ever-popular ones by Chopin (with Janina Fialkowska), Mendelssohn
(with So-Ock Kim) and Shostakovich (with Natasha Paremski), the latter as part
of an all-Shostakovich concert which the composer's son will conduct and which
will include the popular Fifth Symphony. Another great Russian Fifth Symphony,
that of Tchaikovsky, is included in an evening devoted to this most romantic of
composers; also a concert devoted to the sassy and swinging master from the
New World, George Gershwin. Any spiritual concerns are met by Beethoven's
Mass in C with a modern counterpart from Bob Chilcott which uses texts from
both the Requiem Mass and the Book of Common Prayer.
Finally, the series draws to a close with music that thrills and raises the spirits (such
as the Second Symphony of Sibelius) and excites in its parading of colour, rhythm
and vivid imagery (Dvorák's Carnival Overture and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an
Exhibition, played in a less-familiar orchestral guise). These Royal Philharmonic
Orchestra concerts offer a wide range of wonderful music to enjoy and share and
will, without doubt, leave the audience wanting more.
MEET THE ARTISTS
Edward Seckerson (Chief Critic, Independent and
BBC presenter) chats informally to the artists in his
pre-concert talks.
From 6.30pm in the main auditorium, Edward can be heard
enlightening audiences with interesting facts about the evening's programme, and
engaging in discussion with the artists themselves.
See individual concerts for details.
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is very grateful to Cadogan Estates for
their generous support of this concert series.
