Maxim Shostakovich is the son of the great Russian composer, Dmitri Shostakovich. He brings
very particular insights to his father's music; here the cheeky and scintillating
Festive Overture,
the witty Piano Concerto No.2 with its lovely slow movement being of moonlit radiance, and the
Fifth Symphony, which has ambiguous political overtones and remains one of Shostakovich's most
personal and richly rewarding pieces.

Piano Concerto No.1
Sibelius
Symphony No.2
Weber's
Oberon Overture makes for a magical
and exuberant curtain-raiser. In celebration of the
200th anniversary of Chopin's birth, Canadian pianist
Janina Fialkowska returns to Cadogan Hall to perform his First Piano Concerto. Regarded as one of
the world's leading Chopin interpreters, she is the perfect exponent for the brilliant piano writing of
this Concerto. Sibelius' Second Symphony provides a fitting finale to the evening. Inspired by his
Finnish homeland, it is a work full of romantic melodies and electrifying thrust.
